About the formats

HEIC High Efficiency Image (HEIF)

What iPhones and iPads save photos as. HEIC files are about half the size of a JPG of the same quality, but Windows needs extra extensions to show them, and many apps and websites still can't read them.

JPG JPEG image

The most widely supported photo format there is. JPG keeps files small by discarding detail the eye barely notices, which suits photos well but blurs sharp text and edges. It has no transparency.

Questions

HEIC to JPG, answered.

Do I need the HEIF or HEVC extension from the Microsoft Store?

No. Crustify reads HEIC on its own, so you don't need to install or buy either extension.

Why are the JPGs bigger than the HEIC files?

HEIC compresses better than JPG. At the same quality a JPG is usually larger, often by about half again or more. That's the price of opening everywhere.
